"Treasures in Heaven"
Reading: Matthew 6:19-21 (ESV)
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."
Devotional:
Our culture places a high value on accumulating wealth and possessions. Everywhere we turn, we are bombarded with messages encouraging us to seek more—more money, more status, more things. But Jesus challenges us to consider what truly matters. He calls us to store up treasures in heaven rather than on earth.
Treasures on earth are fleeting. They can be destroyed, stolen, or lost. They may bring temporary satisfaction, but they are not eternal. Our most prized possession will one day pass through a yard sale and a Goodwill store to eventually land at the landfill. In contrast, treasures in heaven are everlasting. They are secure and immune to the ravages of time. But what does it mean to lay up treasures in heaven? It means investing in the things of God—loving others, serving the needy, sharing the Gospel, and living a life that honors God.
When we focus our hearts on heavenly treasures, our lives take on a new purpose. We are no longer driven by the temporary and the material but by the eternal and the spiritual. Our priorities shift, and we begin to see life from God’s perspective. This shift is crucial because, as Jesus points out, where our treasure is, there will also be our heart. If our treasure is in heaven, our hearts will follow, leading us to live in a way that reflects God’s kingdom values.
Prayer:
Lord, help me to set my heart on treasures in heaven. Guide me to invest in what truly matters and to live each day with eternity in mind. Redirect my ambitions from earthly gains to spiritual growth, and may my life be a reflection of Your eternal kingdom. Amen.
