"The Lamp of the Body"
Reading: Matthew 6:22-23 (ESV)
“The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!"
Devotional:
Jesus uses the metaphor of the eye to illustrate a profound spiritual truth. The eye, He says, is the lamp of the body. If our eye is healthy—focused on the right things—our entire being will be filled with light. But if our eye is unhealthy—fixated on the wrong things—our whole body will be full of darkness, which makes us blind.
The connection between our hearts and our eyes is significant. What we choose to focus on, what we allow our eyes to dwell on, shapes our inner life. If our eyes are fixed on the things of God—His word, His will, His kingdom—our hearts will be aligned with His purposes.
