Removing the Log

Compassion and humility are the bridge that connects us to one another and to God.

Read: Matthew 7:3-5, Isaiah 49:13, & Micah 6:8

Jesus' metaphor of the speck and the log in Matthew 7:3-5 offers a striking illustration of human hypocrisy. It is easy to see the faults in others while ignoring our own, but Jesus calls us to reverse this perspective. He challenges us to first remove the log from our own eye before attempting to remove the speck from our brother's eye.

This teaching is not a prohibition against helping others but a call to self-examination. Jesus' point was to address the tendency to overlook our own sins while criticizing others. Jesus revealed an incredible understanding of human nature, recognizing how easy it is to ignore our own flaws while focusing on those of others.

Before we can help others with their shortcomings, we must first confront our own. This requires humility—acknowledging our own sins and seeking God's grace. Only then are we in a position …
