"Serving Two Masters"
Reading: Matthew 6:24 (ESV)
“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money."
Devotional:
Jesus’ teaching here is clear and uncompromising: we cannot serve two masters. The choice between God and money is not merely about our finances; it’s about our ultimate loyalty. Money, in this context, represents all the worldly pursuits that vie for our devotion—wealth, status, comfort, and security. No one can serve two gods, God and money, since each demands absolute loyalty.
The pull of these worldly pursuits is strong, often subtly luring us away from our primary commitment to God. When we start to trust in money or material things, they begin to take the place of God in our lives. We might find ourselves prioritizing our careers over our spiritual growth or our possessions over our relationships with others.
