Day 5: Sacrificial Love in Action
Reading: Philippians 2:1-11, 1 John 3:16-18, John 13:31-35
Our Love for Each Other is the Unmistakable Sign of Christ's Work in Us.
Devotional:
The ultimate expression of love is sacrifice. Christ’s death on the cross stands as the most perfect demonstration of sacrificial love. Today’s readings call us to embrace this sacrificial love as a concept to admire and a practice to embody in our daily lives. Philippians 2 paints a powerful picture of Christ’s humility, obedience, and sacrifice. He gave up His divine privileges, becoming human and humbling Himself to the point of death—even death on a cross—so that we might have life. His love was selfless, impartial, lasting, and sacrificial.
This kind of love demands action. As 1 John 3:16-18 emphasizes, “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.” True love is not simply about words or feelings but is reflected in our willingness to sacrifice for others.
Reflection:
As you reflect on these readings, consider the areas in your life where you may be holding back from fully loving others. Are there comforts, rights, or desires you're unwilling to surrender that prevent you from truly serving those around you? Ask yourself: Is there someone in your life that God is calling you to love more deeply, with a sacrificial heart? Loving like Christ means giving of ourselves, even when it costs us something—our time, comfort, or resources.
Jesus’ love was selfless. He didn’t love for personal gain but out of compassion and commitment. He reached out to those who had nothing to offer and loved them without expectation. In our daily interactions, are we loving people regardless of what they can give in return, or are we selective in our kindness?
Jesus’ love was impartial. He ministered to all, regardless of their social status, political views, or race. Is there someone you might be excluding or overlooking because they don’t fit into your comfort zone?
Jesus’ love was lasting. Even when He was rejected and denied, He continued to love. Can you think of relationships in your life where love has faded or grown cold? Ask God to give you the strength to renew that love, even if it requires forgiveness and grace.
Jesus’ love was sacrificial. The ultimate measure of His love was the cross. He gave His life, suffering unimaginable pain, so that we might live. What might you need to sacrifice to love others as Christ loves you?
Application:
Take time today to reflect on one specific act of sacrificial love you can perform, no matter how small, that reflects Christ's love. Whether it’s offering your time to someone in need, letting go of a personal right to serve another, or reaching out to someone you’ve avoided, allow the love of Christ to shine through you.
This love is the unmistakable sign of Christ’s work in us, as outlined in John 13:31-35. When we love sacrificially, we mirror the heart of Christ to a world in desperate need of His transformative love.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for the ultimate example of love you displayed on the cross. Help me to follow in Your footsteps, loving others sacrificially. Please show me where I’m holding back and give me the courage to put others’ needs before mine. Let my life be a testimony to Your love through my actions. Give me the strength to love selflessly, impartially, lastingly, and sacrificially, just as You have loved me. Amen.
