Thursday Devotional: When the Lot Falls on You
Relentless When You Run
“He said to them, ‘Pick me up and hurl me into the sea; then the sea will quiet down for you, for I know it is because of me that this great tempest has come upon you.’” Jonah 1:12 (ESV)
Jonah does one thing in this chapter that deserves more credit than it usually gets. When the lot falls on him, when the evidence points in his direction, when there is no longer any way to deflect or delay, he tells the truth. He owns it. He names the cause. He says the words every leader fears: it is because of me.
That moment does not erase what he did. It does not undo the storm or refund the sailors their lost cargo. Accountability never unwinds the damage. What it does is stop the bleeding and restore the possibility of trust. The sailors cannot fix a problem they cannot locate. Jonah naming himself as the source gives everyone on that ship something real to work with.
